Fundamentals of Clinical Practice

Fundamentals of Clinical Practice I (FCP) is a year-long course, an introduction to fundamental concepts and skills related to providing medical care. It is composed of units that address specific knowledge and skills related to patient care, communication, and medical practice in the United States. These topics are not isolated but highly integrated with each other and the concept of Professionalism is integral to each of them. Topics introduced in year I will be expanded in the second year.

The nature of the content of FCP requires experiences outside of the large group setting in the lecture hall. Educational experiences in the course include activities in the Clinical Skills Center, a laboratory that uses Standardized Patients to provide a forum for learning about and practicing various skills. The course also includes a brief experience in a clinical setting. Students spend time in a physician's office which provides an opportunity to apply course content in an authentic setting. Because competency regarding some of the objectives of FCP cannot be validly assessed using multiple choice exams, the course involves a number of written assignments and performance exercises.
